Yankees general manager Brian Cashman will rappel from the 22nd story of a building in Connecticut this weekend wearing an elf costume as part of a holiday celebration.
I'm not making this up.
Doogster, how about you? I have visions of the Coronado Bridge and long ropes. Moorad will show you how it's done. Let's hope he does so after getting back to me about his guy Byrnes joining the Strategic Planners.
As for upgrading the 90-victory Padres with little, if any, extra spending money from Moorad, that may be only slightly easier than matching Cashman's antics.
Baseball people have been telling me the Padres are headed for a fall. They see a big dropoff from the 90 wins this year. It's not exactly a bold prediction for them to make. And we know how stupid the smart crowd looked last season by the time the Padres were done playing. That said, the highlight of the Padres' offseason so far appears to be acquiring draft picks. (And it's good that they're getting extra draft picks.) The deal for Cameron Maybin made sense, too, whether it works out or not. Looks like the Padres still will be able to pitch. There's that. And DePodesta leaving freed up nearly $1 million, so maybe Moorad can put that in the Gonzalez Fund.
What's next? I'll be at the winter meetings. I'm thinking the Rockies, Dodgers and Giants will be staying in the posh rooms. Will check the local Motel 8 for the Padres' delegation.
